I used metacrawlers and researched the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints. I found a lot of good links through this site and would advice to use it. the web sites it led me to are really good because when researching a religion there are a lot of false facts on the internet so you really have to make sure that are finding honest material that is not untrue.

Web directories are going to give you a lot fewer hits than you'll get with a search engine, but all of the results should be relevant.

The site that I was assigned to review was Lycos.com. The site was easy to navigate and easy to use. The site is very similar to msn.com. There are numerous quick links to the news and weather. You also have the ability to create an email, which is free and very similar to a hotmail account. The search engine returned good results as it used ask.com.

I reviewed the KartOO metacrawler. Here’s the deal:

Databases: uses several such as altavista, yahoo, and conversa2.
Strengths: you have to see it to believe it!! This is a very visual tool – it shows a web of interrelatedness for your results. The search engine takes your query and almost compartmentalizes all of the information into relevant packages. The information is presented in a map format with arrows showing the relatedness. The results are very narrow – you don’t have to plow through a lot of hits like you get on Google. When you conduct a search, relevant terms are displayed on the left side of the screen, which should be helpful for the beginner researcher who may be unfamiliar with a topic.
Weaknesses: not broad enough for the beginning researcher; selects the most relevant links for you.
Default operation: the more specific you are with your search, the fewer results you get.
Boolean searching: uses this method with terms like “and,” “or,” and “like.”
Truncation: occurs if you use quotation marks for exact search phrases.

I had never used or heard of Exalead before I had this assignment. When I got there my first impression was that it looked similar to Google. I did a search of European Union and the site had ideas on how to narrow your search. You could narrow it by searching in only specific languages, in blogs only, and related search ideas. The engine is very easy to use and has a link to search Wikipedia exclusively, which is a downfall as Wikipedia is not always reliable. Another thing I noticed was that Exalead's search results were sending me to the main webpage not a link off of the main web page. So instead of being linked to a website with a fift foot URL, I was sent to one with a www.somethingsomething.com. I found that interesting because google doesn't do that. What I liked the most was that you could view the website right from the page of results. That way you can narrow what you are looking for by if the webiste looks like something that you would like. I really liked this website and will probably use it again.

The website has been around since 1991 at CERN inGeneva, and is always recently updated, as it showed on towards the bottom of the screen. The last update it received wasMarch 2, 2008. It is ran by Tim Berners- Lee, the creator of HMTL and it is the oldest catalogue of the Web.at CERN in Geneva. It is also ran by various other maintainers that focus on their own page, making a large chain of people working together to keep the website functioning.

Strenghts:
* The website is informative and easy to navigate
* It provides a variety of databases in numerous amounts of topics
* The results that came back were informative
Weaknesses:
* Provides a bit too much information to go through
* Some information wasn't exactly what I was looking for
Basic Searching:
* It works when you do search engine math and Boolean. You are able to get a decent amount of pages when entering in phrases and such.
Advance Search:
* To go into the advance search you can enter what sort of document type you are looking for
* pick the option of exact word forms
* it is not case sensitive
Field Searching:
* many of the items that I used to search for topics came back in organized items with specific words highlighted in yellow according to keywords.
Stop Words:
* WWW Virtual Library searches most phrases with quotations and regular + and - signs but comes up with very detached results that contain sentences with the world "and".
Overall Evaluation:
This search engine was informative, user friendly and able to pull up some information about the topic that I was looking for. If I was going to rate this wesite from 1-10 I would have to say that it's probably a 7 because the site didn't give as many pages of results as I would have liked. However, the website still produces enough options for someone to find at least some useful information for your research.

had never used AltaVista before today. I found the search engine very easy to use and found many more websites than I had found before while using google. What is also great about AltaVista is that when you type in what you are looking for you can also receive images, video and recent news. This tool will be extremely helpful when it comes to needing those "extras" for my paper. On the advanced section of AltaVista I found this also to be helpful because with my topic I have to be extremely narrowed and this function allowed me to do so. The one thing that I did not like about Alta Vista was that when I typed in certain topics the number of hits did not display. During some of my topic research everything popped up on my screen, from buying a tracking dog to the origins of the original working dogs. This is where the advanced function really helped. I am looking forward to using this search engine again.

It tells about college admissions, state by state, and gives financial aid information including loans, FAFSA and grants.

It was copyrighted 1998-2008.

It uses Google as a search engine which was easy to navigate.

Some of the links didn't exist or were not available.

It stated that there were monthly resource updates, but no updates have been done since 7-2007.

This website did contain alot of information.
