www.ask.com
The most common search engine that I use is ask.com. I find that this search engine is very useful and easy to use. It allows you to do mathematical searches as well as Boolean searching. One feature that I do like is the ability of the search to show images. The advance search is also very useful and easy to navigate. One of the disadvantages is that search engine does not have the ability to uncluster results.
www.clusty.com
When reviewing this search engine it really gave me some good places to go. I was able to look up the subject I wanted and it also gave me other places to go.
It gives a wide variety of databases such as
Strengths
Up to date information
Narrows your subject
More subject that are related
Weaknesses
Gave you some topic that weren't really what I was looking for
Some of the items that came was not helpful to me, but once I narrowed a little it started to go in right direction.
Advanced functions
Gives the place its Cluster, sources and sites all together
Im not really sure what the operators supported were.
Overall this search engine was a good. I was able to get information that I could use in my research paper. I was able to look at subjects that I wasn't really thinking about. It also has a good source database.

The website has been around since 1991 at CERN inGeneva, and is always recently updated, as it showed on towards the bottom of the screen. The last update it received wasMarch 2, 2008. It is ran by Tim Berners- Lee, the creator of HMTL and it is the oldest catalogue of the Web.at CERN in Geneva. It is also ran by various other maintainers that focus on their own page, making a large chain of people working together to keep the website functioning.
website address: http://vlib.org/ Strenghts: * The website is informative and easy to navigate * It provides a variety of databases in numerous amounts of topics * The results that came back were informative Weaknesses: * Provides a bit too much information to go through * Some information wasn't exactly what I was looking for Basic Searching: * It works when you do search engine math and Boolean. You are able to get a decent amount of pages when entering in phrases and such. Advance Search: * To go into the advance search you can enter what sort of document type you are looking for * pick the option of exact word forms * it is not case sensitive Field Searching: * many of the items that I used to search for topics came back in organized items with specific words highlighted in yellow according to keywords. Stop Words: * WWW Virtual Library searches most phrases with quotations and regular + and - signs but comes up with very detached results that contain sentences with the world "and". Overall Evaluation: This search engine was informative, user friendly and able to pull up some information about the topic that I was looking for. If I was going to rate this wesite from 1-10 I would have to say that it's probably a 7 because the site didn't give as many pages of results as I would have liked. However, the website still produces enough options for someone to find at least some useful information for your research. |

Academic Info Review
Academic Info review. This website is a network organization. It is an educational subject directory linking to online education, degree programs, academic colleges, technical colleges, and universities. It has state by state information about any subject a person's interested in, including Culinary Arts, Religion, Sciences, Laws and Government, etc. The site uses Google as it's search engine which was easy to navigate. It also supports Boolean. The site also shows you how to prepare to take college entrance exams, and gives information regarding financial aid including FAFSA, loans and grants. It's strength was that all the information was very indepth with alot of information available to anyone who is thinking about furthering their education. It's weakness was that some of the links or pages did not open up, or were not available. It also has not been recently updated, as it stated that there were monthly resource updates, with the last one being 7-2007. The site stated that it was copyrighted 1998-2008, and is maintained by Mike Madin. |

had never used AltaVista before today. I found the search engine very easy to use and found many more websites than I had found before while using google. What is also great about AltaVista is that when you type in what you are looking for you can also receive images, video and recent news. This tool will be extremely helpful when it comes to needing those "extras" for my paper. On the advanced section of AltaVista I found this also to be helpful because with my topic I have to be extremely narrowed and this function allowed me to do so. The one thing that I did not like about Alta Vista was that when I typed in certain topics the number of hits did not display. During some of my topic research everything popped up on my screen, from buying a tracking dog to the origins of the original working dogs. This is where the advanced function really helped. I am looking forward to using this search engine again.

The search engine I found very handy!
It took me a couple minutes to figure out it's purpose, but after that I find it very helpful. Metacrawler is not like a normal search engine, because it filters down from them. The strengths I found about the search engine is the exact phrase option, the advance search, and the prefrences option. Within preferences spelling is a choice, as well as filtering, time, bold, and language. The weaknesses are the limitations of information. From the search engine you choose which search engine to enter next, unlike Google, where you can pick an article. Also it only offers ten languages. I liked evaluating the Metacrawler, because I now understand it's purpose, I find it helpful, and it's also another option to help me find more research.
Do you find this valuable?

It tells about college admissions, state by state, and gives financial aid information including loans, FAFSA and grants.
It was copyrighted 1998-2008. It uses Google as a search engine which was easy to navigate. Some of the links didn't exist or were not available. It stated that there were monthly resource updates, but no updates have been done since 7-2007. This website did contain alot of information. |
