The most common search engine that I use is ask.com. I find that this search engine is very useful and easy to use. It allows you to do mathematical searches as well as Boolean searching. One feature that I do like is the ability of the search to show images. The advance search is also very useful and easy to navigate. One of the disadvantages is that search engine does not have the ability to uncluster results.

I would recommend this site for user-friendly search results as well as up to date information that is documented. Search results came back in a list form that was easy to read and make selections on a given result.
Strengths:

Gigablast Stacks Up Against Current Leaders in Search

55% of study participants find Gigablast ‘as good as or better than Google’

Santa Clara, CA – SMX West – February 27, 2008 (PR NEWSWIRE) – Gigablast, Inc., (www.gigablast.com), a pioneer in Internet search, today announced the results of a recent search engine comparison study. A majority of study participants, over 55%, found the Gigablast search results to be as good as, or better than, search results from Google, Inc.
The study, which compared Gigablast’s and Google’s search results side-by-side, without brand names or logos, included over 220 participants. Forty-eight sample search queries were used, with the queries comprising an unbiased selection of the top queries of 2007, as reported by Google’s own Google Zeitgeist service. The majority of study participants were from North America (approximately 73% of participants). The study was conducted between February 15th and 18th, 2008.
Compared with Ask.com’s search results in a separate study, Gigablast performed even better. In that study (using the same sample search queries from Google’s Google Zeitgeist service), 44% of users preferred Gigablast to Ask.com (versus only 34% of users who preferred Ask to Gigablast). Including tie votes, 66% of users voted Gigablast better than, or as good as, Ask.com.
Comparison studies with Microsoft Live Search and Yahoo are now in progress. Strengths
Looks in many different databases so the results for a search were numerous.
The site allows you to focus your search by using the web, research, news, images, video, health, shop, and more tabs above the search bar.
Gives a list of similar terms for searches.
Search math does work.
Search wizard tab off to the side of the search box allows you to input into boxes labeled “All of these word,” “The Exact Phrase,” “Any of these words,” and “Without the words.” There is also a box for language selection and domain inclusion or exclusion.
Has an article on how to search better describing search engine math.
Can use “” to get phrase specific results.
Weaknesses
Boolean search does not seem to work most of the time

All in all I really enjoyed using this site and I found some good websites in the process.

Windows live was able to pull up pages that had a lot of useful information. They also give you a good discription of the page before you even click on the link. Unlike google and yahoo that gives you everything that has even one word of what you are looking for, so you get a lot of extra stuff that you don't need.

The one down side to this is that you have to know exactly what you are looking for and put that in, otherwise you will get anything and everything

Just as with everyting, there is always the good and the bad. The bad part...well maybe not so much bad has honlding potential to be frustrating. You have to have you word math just right. If it is not you will find things that don't even have anything to do with your subject.

I would recommend this page, just have your word math correct and you will be doing great! I believe this sight could really offer students some new angles to thier papers. As with my topic, Lou Gehrigs Disease, a lot of the pages say the same thing, so it is great to find new things.

The site also shows you how to prepare to take college entrance exams, and gives information regarding financial aid including FAFSA, loans and grants. It's strength was that all the information was very indepth with alot of information available to anyone who is thinking about furthering their education. It's weakness was that some of the links or pages did not open up, or were not available. It also has not been recently updated, as it stated that there were monthly resource updates, with the last one being 7-2007.
The site stated that it was copyrighted 1998-2008, and is maintained by Mike Madin.

The website has been around since 1991 at CERN inGeneva, and is always recently updated, as it showed on towards the bottom of the screen. The last update it received wasMarch 2, 2008. It is ran by Tim Berners- Lee, the creator of HMTL and it is the oldest catalogue of the Web.at CERN in Geneva. It is also ran by various other maintainers that focus on their own page, making a large chain of people working together to keep the website functioning.

Strenghts:
  • The website is informative and easy to navigate
  • It provides a variety of databases in numerous amounts of topics
  • There aren't excessive links to other "kind of related" websites on the sides of the webpage
  • The results that came back were informative
Weaknesses:

  • Some information wasn't exactly what I was looking for

      Basic Searching:
      • It works when you do search engine math and Boolean. You are able to get a decent amount of pages when entering in phrases and such.

      Advance Search:
      • To go into the advance search you can enter what sort of document type you are looking for
      • pick the option of exact word forms
      • you have the option of the output format and synonyms
      • it is not case sensitive

      Field Searching:

      • many of the items that I used to search for topics came back in organized items with specific words highlighted in yellow according to keywords.

      Stop Words:
      • WWW Virtual Library searches most phrases with quotations and regular + and - signs but comes up with very detached results that contain sentences with the world "and".

      Sorting:
      • Results are sorted by relevency

      Overall Evaluation:
      This search engine was informative, user friendly and able to pull up some information about the topic that I was looking for. If I was going to rate this wesite from 1-10 I would have to say that it's probably a 7 because the site didn't give as many pages of results as I would have liked. However, the website still produces enough options for someone to find at least some useful information for your research.

              Basic Searching: It supports both Search Engine Math and Boolean. You can specify phases by “quoting”. In the It is not case sensitive. It also doesn’t check spelling. It doesn’t give suggestions that might yield more results.

              Advance Search: in the advance search option you can choose from the publication year to the article name, author, or publisher.

              Field Searching: Most of the files it brought back were PDF.

              Overall Opinion: I wasn’t really happy with this search engine. When I typed in “multiple Sclerosis” it brought back only 2 results. (Yahoo! brought back 33.4 million) One of the pages it suggested was not available, but they page it did find was helpful. I was very surprised because it’s sponsored by the National Science Foundation, so I figured it would have many results especially in this field. I will stick with a bigger search engine like Google or Yahoo!. The Scout searches are probably helpful if you have a broader medical subject with a need for publications, or case studies.
